Watch a site-specific performance inspired by the lake

"Feathered Tides" is a performance work directed by Performance Artist Mitsu Salmon. On four late-May days, the piece will be presented along the Miller Bird Refuge's trails. 

Site-specific performances draw inspiration from the space they'll be presented in. Dancers will perform the work on the following dates: 

  • May 24 at 3 p.m., 4:30 p.m. and 6 p.m. 
  • May 25 at 3 p.m., 4:30 p.m. and 6 p.m.
  • May 30 at 4:30 p.m. and 6 p.m. 
  • May 31 at 4:30 p.m. and 6 p.m.

Visit billboards offering two alternative futures for Great Salt Lake

Utah Artist Nick Pedersen's display "Here Today, Gone Tomorrow," stands on the corner of 870 South and 900 West. The thought provoking piece offers up two alternative futures the lake could face—one of demise and one of flourishing. 

Visit the display, which is part of Wake the Great Salt Lake, until June 4. 

Experience 'The Great Salt Lake: An Uplifting Artistic Oasis' at the Salt Lake County Government Center until Dec. 15, 2025 

Featuring collaborative efforts to support Salt Lake County's namesake body of water, the exhibit "emphasizes the importance and impact of the lake on our local community," according to Wake the Great Salt Lake. 

The display features works from the Salt Lake County Visual Art Collection.

Share stories of the salty waters with Great Salt Lake Hopeline all year

By calling 979-GSL-HOPE (979-475-4673) or visiting an upcycled phone booth, community members can share their stories and interact with the sounds of Great Salt Lake. 

According to Wake the Great Salt Lake, collected voicemails will be used for future projects — the hotline aims to start lake-focused dialogue and spark hope for the struggling body of water.

Take a walk this summer with state park rangers 

While walking along the beaches of the lake with Great Salt Lake State Park rangers, you'll be treated to facts about the natural and cultural history of the area and stunning views of the lake and its wildlife. 

Morning walks will happen on these dates:

Full moon walks will happen on these dates: 

  • June 11 
  • July 10
  • Aug. 9 
  • Sept. 7

Participate in Seven Canyons Trust's Range 2 River Relay

On Saturday, Sept. 20, participants of this relay course will explore Salt Lake Valley waterways through biking, running, and non-motorized boating.

Take a self-guided tour of the Great Salt Lake Shorelands Preserve

The preserve covers 4,400 acres of wetland and upland habitat just outside of Layton. According to its website, some of the largest wildlife gatherings to be recorded have been viewed from the visitor center. 

The Great Salt Lake Shorelands Preserve invites the public to download an audio tour to guide their visits. Current operating hours are 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.
